Sorry to burst your bubble, but you can’t use just any old camping mattress or sleeping pad in cold weather,

If you’re planning a winter camping trip, you’re going to need a mattress or pad with an R-value of at least 4, preferably 5.

R-value is a measure of insulation, and when it comes to winter camping, the higher, the better.

You can also stack mattresses and pads together to combine R-values, which is something we do.

In our case, we have Therm-a-Rest air mattresses with R-values of 4.2, which is just shy of the recommended value of 5 for winter camping in extreme cold.

But when we stack them with our Therm-a-Rest closed cell foam pads (listed here at the very bottom), that brings our overall R-value up to 6.2 because the foam pads have an R-value of 2.

We definitely don’t own and endless supply of high R-value sleeping pads, but if we wanted to, these are the ones we’d choose.

Choosing the right sleeping pad for your winter camping adventures

When searching for the best sleeping pad with a high R-value for winter camping, there are a few key factors to consider for helping you stay warm and comfortable during those cold nights outdoors:

R-Value: The most important factor to look for is the R-value.

This is a measure of the pad’s ability to insulate you from the cold ground.

Generally, higher R-values (4 and above) indicate better insulation.

For winter camping, you should aim for a sleeping pad with at least an R-value of 4 or 5.

This will provide enough insulation to ensure that you stay warm even during extreme cold temperatures.

Thickness: Thicker pads usually provide better insulation and comfort.

However, they can also be bulkier and heavier.

Aim for a balance of warmth, comfort, and packability to suit your needs.

Size and Weight: It’s important to find a pad that is both comfortable to sleep on and easy to carry in your backpack.

Look for a pad that is lightweight and compact when deflated or rolled up.

Material

Pay attention to the sleeping pad’s material, which contributes to the insulation properties and durability.

Closed-cell foam pads are lightweight and durable but may lack comfort compared to air and self-inflating pads.

Air and self-inflating pads, made from materials such as ripstop polyester or nylon, provide greater comfort and insulation but might be heavier and more susceptible to punctures.

Here are some highlights to look for in a high R-value sleeping pad:

  • High R-value (4-5 or above) for adequate insulation during winter camping
  • Thickness for a balance of insulation, comfort, and packability
  • Lightweight and compact when deflated or rolled up for easy transport
  • Durable material for reliability during those cold nights
  • Ease of inflation and deflation to save time and energy
  • Puncture resistant features to reduce the risk of damage

When you find a pad that ticks all the boxes, you’ll be ready for a warm and comfortable winter camping experience.
